MONEY MATH, PART 2

Money Math is a course that is long overdue, it introduces students to the fundamental principles of money and money management. Part 2 of this course continues teaching personal finance, addressing loans, financing large purchases like buying a home and a car. It moves on to savings & investments, paying taxes, and lastly cybersecurity. Money Math is a critical course that all students need if they are to successfully navigate their financial future. Money Math is approved by the University of California A-G as an elective (category G).
Upon completion of this course, the student is awarded 5 credits. Each credit corresponds to 15 hours of study. Of course, some students work more quickly than others, and some can devote more hours to study, so some students are able to complete the course in an accelerated rate.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
In this module, students gain a comprehension of the following:
- The most common types of loans, including bank loans, financing college with student loans, and managing student debt. Predatory lending, like payday loans is also addressed.
- Financing large purchases – buying a home and financing a car.
- Renting or buying a home; and buying or leasing a car.
- Paying taxes – federal and state income tax, sales tax, estate taxes, capital gains, and completing a tax return.
- Budgeting and creating a budget.
- Savings and investment vehicles like stocks & bonds, and different types of managed funds like mutual funds, index funds etc.
- Saving for retirement and the tax benefits associated with the different types of retirement accounts.
- Health savings accounts and life insurance.
- Cybersecurity – including lost and stolen credit cards, different types of fraud like skimmers, scams, and phising.
- Identity theft and protecting yourself online, as well as how to recover from identity theft.
