CHEMISTRY, PART 1

Price: $125 | Credits: One Semester | Dept: Science | Course ID# 261-1

This course is designed to be the first semester of Chemistry and includes a laboratory component. The course includes the topics of the study of Chemistry, classifying matter, physical vs. chemical properties, elements and the periodic table, chemical compounds and bonding, chemical reactions, the conservation of mass, avogardro’s number and the mole, chemical proportions in compounds, and molecular formulas. Chemistry is approved by the University of California A-G as a laboratory Science – Physical (category D).

Laboratory Science

To satisfy the requirements of a chemistry course, TWO components are required.

  1. Our online course—provides the curriculum with videos, quizzes, assignments, and a final exam.
  2. A wet lab—a lab kit that must be bought separately. The course cannot be completed without the kit, which costs about $200 with our discount.

Laboratory Kit – This companion kit is NOT included in the course and needs to be purchased separately.
The kit must be purchased from Quality Science Labs and will be delivered by mail. SVHS and Quality Science Labs have designed the kit to accompany the course. The same kit can be used for Part 2 of this course–only one kit needs to be purchased for students taking Chemistry Part 1 and Part 2. To receive a 20% discount on the lab kit, enroll in chemistry and use the customer code provided in the course. Don’t delay – order the kit as soon as you enroll in the course, as it will have to be shipped to you.

Lab Details and Descriptions
Detailed instructions for the wet labs are provided in the lab kit. Click here for a summary description of the labs covered in this course.

Credits & Study Hours
Upon completion of this course, the student is awarded 5 credits. Each credit corresponds to 15 hours of study. Of course, some students work more quickly than others and can devote more hours to study, so some students are able to complete the course at an accelerated rate. Please note that chemistry is difficult; completing both parts over a summer semester is challenging.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In this module, students gain a comprehension of the following:

  • Great discoveries in Chemistry.
  • physical and chemical properties, what they are, and their classifications.
  • Learn the elements, what they are made of, and their places on the Periodic Table.
  • Learn about orbitals, trends in the periodic table, and the atomic model.
  • Introduction to electrons, what they are, and their importance.
  • Learn what chemical compounds are, how they are formed, and their makeup.
  • Look at ionic and covalent compounds and various types of chemical bonds.
  • Learn how to write chemical formulas and balance chemical equations.
  • Learn about different types of chemical reactions, including synthesis, decomposition, combustion, oxidation-reduction, single and double-displacement reactions, and acid-base neutralization.
  • Learn about isotopes, what they are, and their place in the study of chemistry.
  • Learn about atomic mass and what atomic mass is, and practice calculating atomic mass.
  • Introduction to Avogadro’s number and the mole, learn what it is and how it is used in chemical equations.
  • Converting between mass, mole, and the number of particles.
  • Learn about the chemical proportions in compounds.
  • Learn about chemical composition and how to calculate the percentage of composition.
  • Review the empirical formula and learn its importance in the study of chemistry.
  • Review the molecular formula and how to determine and calculate empirical and molecular formulas from chemical equations.
  • Learn to titrate unknown substances and continue to practice converting between units.
