Probability & Statistics, Part 1

Probability & Statistics, Part 1 introduces students to the fundamental concepts used to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data. Students learn to distinguish between populations and samples, classify different types of data, and summarize datasets using frequency tables, graphs, and numerical measures. They examine relationships between variables through scatter plots, trend lines, and correlation coefficients while learning to distinguish correlation from causation. The course also develops a foundation in probability, including simple and compound events, conditional probability, probability rules, probability models, counting techniques, and simulations of random events. These concepts help students use mathematical reasoning to interpret information, evaluate claims, and solve real-world problems involving data and uncertainty. Probability & Statistics is approved by the University of California A-G as mathematics (category C).

Upon completion of this course, the student is awarded 5 credits. Each credit corresponds to 15 hours of study. Of course, some students work more quickly than others, and some can devote more hours to study, so some students are able to complete the course at an accelerated rate.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In this module, students gain a comprehension of the following:

  • How to distinguish between populations and samples and classify variables as qualitative, quantitative, discrete, or continuous.
  • How to organize and summarize data using frequency tables, relative frequency tables, measures of central tendency, and measures of spread.
  • How to create and interpret data displays, identify outliers and clusters, and analyze relationships using scatter plots, trend lines, and correlation coefficients.
  • How to distinguish between correlation and causation when interpreting relationships between variables.
  • How to calculate probabilities involving simple, compound, independent, dependent, and conditional events.
  • How to apply probability rules and use two-way tables, Venn diagrams, tree diagrams, and geometric models to solve problems.
  • How to use factorials, the Fundamental Counting Principle, permutations, and combinations to calculate possible outcomes and probabilities.
  • How to use randomization and simulation to model events and estimate probabilities in real-world situations.
