Earth & Space Science Part 1 explores the origins of the Universe and Earth’s place within it through the study of astronomy, geology, and planetary science. Students investigate the electromagnetic spectrum, the Big Bang Theory, galaxies, stars, and the evolution of the Universe before examining our solar system, planetary motion, the Earth-Moon-Sun system, and small bodies such as asteroids and comets. The course then shifts to Earth’s formation and internal structure, plate tectonics, continental drift, geological dating methods, weathering, erosion, rocks, minerals, soil, and landforms. Throughout the course, students develop scientific reasoning skills by analyzing evidence, interpreting data, and applying Earth and space science concepts to explain natural phenomena. The course is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and approved by the University of California A-G as a laboratory science – Earth and Space Sciences (category D).
Upon completion of this course, the student is awarded 5 credits. Each credit corresponds to 15 hours of study. Of course, some students work more quickly than others, and some can devote more hours to study, so some students are able to complete the course at an accelerated rate.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
In this module, students gain a comprehension of the following:
- How scientists use the electromagnetic spectrum and observational evidence to study the Universe and support the Big Bang Theory.
- The structure, composition, and evolution of galaxies, stars, the Sun, and the solar system.
- How gravity governs planetary motion and how interactions among the Earth, Moon, and Sun produce seasons, eclipses, and lunar phases.
- How Earth formed, how its internal structure and plate tectonics shape the planet, and the evidence supporting continental drift.
- How geologic time is determined using relative and absolute dating methods.
- How weathering, erosion, rocks, minerals, soil, and landforms continuously shape Earth’s surface.
