PHYSICAL SCIENCE, PART 1

Price: $125 | Credits: One Semester | Dept: Science | Course ID# 263-1

Physical Science is an introductory course that builds a strong foundation in chemistry and physics through real-world applications. Part 1 begins with the classification and properties of matter, focusing on pure substances, mixtures, and characteristics like density and reactivity. Students explore atomic structure, periodic trends, and chemical bonding, using naming conventions to write and identify compounds. They classify chemical reactions, balance equations, and apply Le Chatelier’s Principle to understand equilibrium. Real-life topics such as water contamination, plastics, GMOs, and CRISPR are integrated throughout. The course ends with a study of chemical and nuclear energy, including radioactive decay and carbon dating. Physical Science is approved by the University of California A-G as a laboratory science – Interdisciplinary Sciences (category D).

Upon completion of this course, the student is awarded 5 credits. Each credit corresponds to 15 hours of study. Of course, some students work more quickly than others, and some can devote more hours to study, so some students are able to complete the course at an accelerated rate.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In this module, students gain a comprehension of the following:

  • How to classify matter based on its physical and chemical properties, and distinguish between mixtures and pure substances.
  • How the periodic table reveals trends in atomic structure, reactivity, and element behavior.
  • The different types of chemical bonds and how to name and write chemical formulas.
  • The classification and balancing of chemical reactions, and how changes affect equilibrium using Le Chatelier’s Principle.
  • The role of water, carbon, and polymers in living systems, and how topics like GMOs, CRISPR, and plastics connect chemistry to real life.
  • The differences between chemical and nuclear energy, including processes like fission, fusion, radioactive decay, and carbon dating.
